A love song that I believe correlates well with the events of Pride and Prejudice is Girls like You, written by Adam Levine and other members of Maroon 5. Released May 30, 2018, and being the recipient of multiple awards and billboard spots, one of the themes of Girls like You a singer who thanks the women for putting up with all the issues that have happened in the course of their relationship. This compares to how Darcy pursued his marriage with Elizabeth despite all of the issues they had at the beginning of the novel.

In Billy Joel’s 1977 song, “The Stranger,” Joel sings of the deep, hidden truth within a person. “Well we all have a face, that we hide away forever,” and Darcy is no exception. He hides himself with a guise that portrays himself as prideful and arrogant, when he is really just very shy. Joel writes of a time when he couldn’t recognize his significant other because he has never seen her true self before. This is similar to how Elizabeth Bennet feels when she sees Darcy at Pemberely: she sees that he is generous and kind to his staff. She does not recognize Darcy’s mannerisms, and she realizes that her assumptions of him were false.

I feel like this song helps to illustrate Liz and Darcy’s relationship and the society they live in. The song describes the singer’s feeling toward a man, who is rich and brilliant but her “heart is still broke”. She is confused on why her heart is broken/she doesn’t love him even though he is rich, handsome, and smart. Darcy is all of these things, and those traits are what are valued in their society in a man, but Liz still isn’t in love with him though he has money. Also Darcy is rich lol xoxo

I don’t know of any love songs that fit the theme of fighting first, nor do I know any battle songs that have lovey-dovey parts. Therefore, I decided to go with what I’m familiar with and just have some nice, dramatic, and calming battle music. This is “The Battle,” from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

The song is called Cupid by the Spinners. The song was originally created by Sam Cooke but it was covered along with a mashup of a song by Michael Zager’s I’ve Loved you for a Long Time. This song represents the theme of growing love and it also represents within the lyrics the struggle that Darcy goes through to win Elizabeth. The song was originally written for a girl Cooke’s producers saw on the Perry Como show but then let Sam keep it when the heard the girl sing it.

 

Leslie Knope is the main character in the television series Parks and Recreation, and she serves as the Deputy Director of the Parks Department in her city of Pawnee Indiana with a relentless positive attitude and a passion for government which is only eclipsed by her loyalty towards her friends and her love of waffles topped with whipped cream. Leslie’s loyalty towards the people she loves and her primary dislike, which is sparked due to misunderstandings, towards the love of her life in the TV show, Ben Wyatt, mirrors clear similarities to Elizabeth. Her impracticality and high expectations of what her life and society should be also represent the characteristics of Ms. Bennet.

Princess Leia, portrayed by Carrie Fisher in the original Star Wars movie trilogy, is one of the leaders of the Rebel Alliance. She is the twin sister of Luke Skywalker, and is the daughter of Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker. Leia and Elizabeth are both fiercely independent, confident, and quick-witted. Both turn away the love interest of the story at first; When Han Solo flirts with Leia, she says: “I’d just as soon kiss a wookie,” similar to Elizabeth’s quote that Darcy was the last man on Earth that she would marry.
