Darcy’s a Million Dolla Man

The song I chose is “Million Dollar Man” by Lana Del Rey!

I feel like this song helps to illustrate Liz and Darcy’s relationship and the society they live in. The song describes the singer’s feeling toward a man, who is rich and brilliant but her “heart is still broke”. She is confused on why her heart is broken/she doesn’t love him even though he is rich, handsome, and smart. Darcy is all of these things, and those traits are what are valued in their society in a man, but Liz still isn’t in love with him though he has money. Also Darcy is rich lol xoxo

Liz VS Lizzo

I think Lizzo and Liz are both really alike because of their incredibly implied, but not outright, feminism. They both demand more respect and empowerment for women, push for acceptance in looks and how women should act, and shame bodyshaming. Lizzo is an icon of modern women empowerment in popular culture, and she embraces her body type without becoming an outright political activist. The way she acts influences her fans to embrace her beliefs without forcing them, like Elizabeth, who implies feminism while not becoming something as extremist as a feminist writer or something in her time. Lizzo doesn’t care what others think about her, and she doesn’t try and change to fit society, and instead pushes for society to broaden their standards and be more accepting to fit HER. She doesn’t back down, just like Elizabeth. Anyway, stream “Juice” hehe

1984 Song (Katie)

This song is called “Everybody’s Watching Me (Uh Oh)” By The Neighborhood. It came out in 2014.

The song is about someone who is both paranoid and anxious about the idea that everyone is watching him. He talks about someone, possibly a significant other / girlfriend, that he let go, but now falls deeper into paranoia and darkness as he doesn’t have her to confide in.

This reminds me of the book because of the constant watching of Big Brother and how everyone watches everyone else for being rebellious. This song also seems to express the loneliness and anxiety many feel in a society so oppsresive.

Katie’s Orwellian Article

  • Linda Sarsour is the newly designated surrogate for Bernie Sanders.
  • Linda advocated for a organization called the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS), in which could eliminate the state of Israel.
  • Many claim her to be Anti-Semitic.
  • Linda wants to create a “binational” state for Israelis and Palestinians, and she says that they’ve always wanted to live in peace with Israel, despite evidence negating that.
  • She views the world in a black-and-white manner.

This article claims that Linda Sarsour lives in an “Orwellian Universe”, and describes her worldview and morals. She advocates for the destruction of the state of Israel, as she believes the Jewish nature of the state is what is preventing the Palestinians from living in peace. To describe this worldview as “Orwellian” is not exactly on-the-mark, as though it does have to do with forcing opinions on others from a governmental standpoint, it does not have to do with the use of language as a way of controlling others. I don’t believe “Orwellian” is the correct word to describe the nature of her viewpoints.
