For my 1984 song, I have decided to choose Imagine Dragon’s “Natural” for presentation. “Natural” was an alternate rock/pop song released on July 17, 2018, and according to lead singer, Dan Reynolds, is about overcoming adversities the one might come across in life. As for the relation with 1984, many of the lyrics draw comparisons with the bleakness of the world that Winston lives in, and how he continues to try to make his own way. For example, the lyrics that describe how “every one of them has given up and given in” represents how the government of Oceania has a firm grip on how society operates on a daily basis, and “Just another product of today” represents the lifestyle of Winston in this oppressive state. In addition, Winston’s desire to see the truth is shown in the lines of “Let me see the light within the dark trees’ shadowing” and “A bit of the truth, the truth.” To conclude, Natural is a song that does an effective job at summarizing the oppressive world of Oceania, and Winston’s efforts to find his way in all the oppression.

Released in 1968 in the Zombies’ second album “Odyssey and Oracle,” the song “Beechwood Park” was written by Chris White, the bassist of the group. White remembers the bona fide Beechwood Park from his childhood, specifically driving around the park and “seeing steam rising off the road in the summer after rain.”

The lyrics itself are reminiscing about an inviting past that is long gone, and the music is slightly muddled and hazy, perhaps similar to the memory the singer is trying to uncover. Both in “Beechwood Park” and in 1984, the past is a common and significant motif and it’s memory is muddled. Additionally, the tone of the song is slow and melancholy, like life depicted in Oceania.
