This song is called “Everybody’s Watching Me (Uh Oh)” By The Neighborhood. It came out in 2014.

The song is about someone who is both paranoid and anxious about the idea that everyone is watching him. He talks about someone, possibly a significant other / girlfriend, that he let go, but now falls deeper into paranoia and darkness as he doesn’t have her to confide in.

This reminds me of the book because of the constant watching of Big Brother and how everyone watches everyone else for being rebellious. This song also seems to express the loneliness and anxiety many feel in a society so oppsresive.

Look Down (Les Miserables) (2012)

This song shows a society in which the people are repressed by a government seeking control. Though the setting of Oceania contrasts greatly with France during its revolutionary period, the people sing of equality and revolution. If INGSOC’s government was less harsh when handing out punishments, this could be a possible comparison. However, INGSOC does not give out punishments in the severity of simply breaking up protests, but actively seeking out public figures and either making them Public Enemy no.01 or by erasing all traces of their existence. In both settings, the general populace lives in poverty and many are too afraid to fight for the freedom of all.

This song is called Human Nature, was performed by Michael Jackson, and was released in July 3 1983.  The first version of “Human Nature” was written and composed by Steve Porcaro of Toto.[7] He had written the song after his first-grade daughter came home crying because a boy pushed her off the slide. He blurted out three reasons for the incident to comfort her: one, the boy liked her, two, people can be strange and three, it’s “human nature”. It connects to 1984 because I believe the lyrics really represent who Julia is as a character and her entire modus operandi as it were because she is all about chasing after her desires despite the restrictive society of the Party and carries on regardless.

It would seem that professional journalists would have almost no issues when it comes to using words correctly, that is, according to the word’s definition. However, in the news article titled “9/11 and the American Orwellian Nightmare,” published Sept. 6, 2019, the author mistakes the word “Orwellian” for “Authoritarian.” Of course, Authoritarianism is a vital aspect to George Orwell’s 1984, but the term “Orwellian” stems from a deceptive and manipulative use of language, such as propaganda. Within the article, the paranoia and invasion of privacy following 9/11 is compared to 1984 and is described as “Orwellian,” and although lack of privacy is very much present in the novel, “Orwellian” is not quite the technical term to describe the similarities.

9/11 and the American Orwellian Nightmare

• Linda Sarsour is the newly designated surrogate for Bernie Sanders.
• Linda advocated for a organization called the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS), in which could eliminate the state of Israel.
• Many claim her to be Anti-Semitic.
• Linda wants to create a “binational” state for Israelis and Palestinians, and she says that they’ve always wanted to live in peace with Israel, despite evidence negating that.
• She views the world in a black-and-white manner.

This article claims that Linda Sarsour lives in an “Orwellian Universe”, and describes her worldview and morals. She advocates for the destruction of the state of Israel, as she believes the Jewish nature of the state is what is preventing the Palestinians from living in peace. To describe this worldview as “Orwellian” is not exactly on-the-mark, as though it does have to do with forcing opinions on others from a governmental standpoint, it does not have to do with the use of language as a way of controlling others. I don’t believe “Orwellian” is the correct word to describe the nature of her viewpoints.

After reading this article from The Guardian, the following main points become clear:

• The article is criticizing the Trump administration of practicing Orwellian values by threatening to slash federal funding to a joint Duke University- University of North Carolina Chapel Hill that places focus on “Love and Desire in Modern Iran” rather than educating American dominance over the region
• These campuses also criticize Israeli policy, which is also viewed in the article as  further reasoning that the government is responding harshly to the new curriculum
• This incident draws comparisons to the true meaning of “Orwellian” due to how the government is attempting to censor information being spread between two universities

Trump’s insistence that his incorrect Alabama tweet was correct tips into the Orwellian

• Trump made an inaccurate claim on his Twitter account portending the dangers Alabama would face courtesy of Hurricane Dorian
• Trump defended his comment against various professional Weather organizations known for making predictions on scientific signs
• Trump decided to use razor thin excuses to back up his already false claims
• Quotes of Orwellian are utilized and other examples are dawn into demonstrate how Trump and his supporters will do and say all they can to ensure that their statements and declarations are the undisputed truth no matter how much and/or often they are the exact opposite

The article is using the description of Orwellian properly as Trump is using the control of thought with his power as he misguided the people of Alabama who he had within his thrall as the POUTS as it were and he and his supporters used the social media platform of Twitter to control communication and fight back against the aspersions toward Trump’s “tall tales”.

• how this shows that this is an Orwellian change

This article displays the word “Orwellian” in a light in which it means authoritarian. This is not completely accurate, but it can be seen as on the side of being used right. I believe that this article is using the word kind of accurately. Though “Orwellian” implies that misinformation is done using words, this is similar to what Trump did. He asks us to ignore our former knowledge and only believe what he says – that Alabama is located on the East coast of the United States, and will be hit by hurricane Dorian. This is comparable to the authoritarian government in 1984, led by “Big Brother.” This government would also spread lies, promoting them as the only truth.
